It’s been quite a year.  While I haven’t graduated quite yet, I am now officially finished with my coursework here at INSEAD.  It is a good feeling to be wrapping up a major step in my life.  Looking back at where I was just two short years ago (when this blog began) quite a lot has changed.

In 2007, I was working at C&S Wholesale Grocers and progressing well in my career.  I was comfortable in the United States, but felt that I wanted more.  I always knew I wanted to pursue my MBA and felt that the time had come to take the leap.  Before even applying to school, I quit my job and moved to Guatemala to volunteer – fulfilling a commitment I had made to myself back when I was in high school.  In Guatemala I learnt Spanish and began searching through the list of MBA programs to find the right fit.  After a tense application process I was admitted to and accepted an opportunity to come here to INSEAD.

Had I joined a two year program, my life at this moment would be quite different.  I would be wrapping up my core corsework and probably preparing for an internship.  The recession would still be weighing heavily on my shoulders.  My friends and classmates, while diverse, would be predominately from the United States and I might have traveled overseas once or twice during winter break or some other vacation.

Instead, at INSEAD, it’s been a fast-paced tour of the world.I have completed my MBA in just 10 short months.  I’ve visited over 20 countries and probably well over 100 cities.  In school I made some great friends, met my academic goals, and won two business venture competitions.  I have the job I’ve always wanted and am a part of two startups that will carry on after school.  I now have the summer free to travel the US and catch up with some old friends.

A friend of mine was telling me how last week he was Paris, Fontainebleau, London, the Channel Islands and then ended up in Goa before coming back to Sigapore.  It’s not unusual to have friends taking on that sort of schedule.  I guess part of INSEAD is having the global network where those sorts of trips don’t seem too out of the ordinary.  I myself had some crazy ventures like a weekend trip from Singapore to Frankfurt, and another weekend trip from Singapore to Paris then London.  In my job I’m sure that the travel will increase if anything.

INSEAD is a school that is so unique from anything else.  As a pure-play business school the program stands alone from a larger university, giving it some flexibilty in its operations.  We can study on three continents (though I just studied on two) and we wrap it all up in 10 short months.  You make friends from every corner of the world and the world will continue to feel both more grand and yet smaller at the same time.

All in all, I am so happy with my decision.  I am fortunate and cannot forget that, but this past year has been one that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Short note here:

My team won the INSEAD Business Venture Competition. Peter, Mads, and Mic all did a wonderful job in presenting on the Fontainebleau campus.

If anyone is interested in hearing more about the idea, I would be happy to share some of the details.

Small update here. With job locked in and having some more free time as my coursework winds down here at INSEAD (well.. not quite yet, next week I have to submit quite a few case write-ups) I’m starting to hit the road a bit more. Last weekend I went scuba diving in Malaysia. This weekend I’ll be spending in Singapore for that last big push of work before all but one of my classes end. Then the next two weekends will be in Thailand.
Over the weekend of the 31st I’m heading to Krabi for a bit of beach and rock climbing. on the 4th I fly out to Bangkok and then to Chiang Mai for a long weekend in the north part of the country. I’m psyched because Chiang Mai has been on my list of places I want to visit for a long time.

Well, it’s been a while since I put a post up on the board.  It’s been a wild ride here at INSEAD and I can safely say that the past few months have been much less reflective and more living in the moment, trying to find a job, and enjoying the experience that is INSEAD.  In the time that I’ve been here in Singapore, I’ve successfully maxed out my passport and had to file for an extension.  This weekend I’m heading to Malaysia to go scuba diving again… so the travel never ends.  There’s something special about the amount of the world that I have seen in these short 10 months.

On the job search front, it was a stressful but in the end rewarding experience.  When I applied to INSEAD, I stated that I wanted to make my next step at a top consulting firm.  I’m happy say that my next step will be exactly what I planned for.  I will be in London, working for a company where I will be challenged, meet incredible people, and hopefully have an impact on the world in a meaningful way in the process.  While I am proud of this accomplishment, I can’t look past the fact that I am fortunate to be in the position to have this opportunity.  Much of life is fortune, and not acknowledging that would be naive.  Especially in the current economic climate, I couldn’t be happier with the results.

For the summer, it looks like I’ll be doing some travel and helping a couple of friends with a startup that I’ve been involved in most of my time here at INSEAD.  My start time in London is yet to be determined but I will likely start in October, which gives me a good three months to reset before I start.

I will return to the US for a period of time and look forward to seeing many of my friends when I do.

I think back to when I started this blog and where I am now.  It’s been a great trip looking back, and I expect an even more exciting trip as I look forward.  There are moments when you feel quite happy, content, and excited about your life.  I’m in one of those moments.  My goal for now is to take it all in.

Just touching base from Germany.  It’s 5:20am here and I’m pretty much wide awake because I’m still used to Singaporean time.  I’m also in no rush to make the necessary changes in my schedule to adjust given that my time here in country is now ticking down to just 31 more hours.  In 3 hours I’m set to make a presentation on INSEAD and Green Buildings and spend the rest of the day networking and talking with what I hope could be investors for the idea I have.

Looking back at last weekend, Vietnam was awesome.  I didn’t exactly know what I was getting myself into with the whole kitesurfing endeavor but it was quite an adrenaline rush.

Next weekend is Cambodia to go see Angkor Wat, then I’m settling for a couple of weeks to let the dust clear before finals.

This trip in Germany marks the half-way point of my INSEAD experience.  I think it’s rather fitting that such an incredible opportunity to meet businessmen and women from across the world is that milestone.   That’s really what makes INSEAD special.

After a successful end to P2 and a wonderful trip out to the French Alps (Tignes) with some 34 fellow classmates, I enjoyed a relaxing vacation with my family in Europe.  We visited London, Barcelona, and then returned to Paris where I was able to see more of the city under a more relaxed schedule.  On January 2nd, I boarded my plane to Singapore with just my summer clothes in my bag and ready to enjoy the summer.  Since I have arrived here, I’ve certainly grown to love the place.   As a rather western version of Asia, I watched the boats harbor from my plane as I landed and enjoyed how easy it was to get from the airport, communicate in English, and get settled compared to my experience with France.  In some ways, I hardly feel like I’m that far away from home, but at the same time I’m enjoying some amazing new foods and walking around in flip-flops again during the middle of January.

The next four months here in Singapore promise to be an awesome experience.  Granted, I do have a 48 hour trip to Frankfurt, Germany to make a presentation to concerning a business idea that I, along with two friends of mine are pursuing, but for the most part I plan to tour Southeast Asia and enjoy the life on the new campus.  I forsee the next two periods being those of stark contrast.  These next two months, there are more classmates of mine in one place than perhaps we will have at any time during our time here at INSEAD.  The following two months, a majority of them will fly back to France and start their job search in Europe.  I, however, will stay behind with about 150 others and continue my exposure to the SE Asian region.

I look back at where I was 2 years ago with amazement.  At that time I lived in New Hampshire, enjoyed a great life of snowboarding with a successful career but really knew very little about the world compared to where I am now.  At this moment, I find myself able to speak three languages (working on a fourth… kinda) and have lived on three continents in the past 12 months.  INSEAD is truly an experience that you can’t replicate with any other program.  That said, it’s intense and, as my blog has shown, can be all consuming at times.  It’s not that bad though, as I’m able to fit trips like a ski trip to the French Alps and a kite surfing trip in Vietnam less than 2 months apart.

Cheers, Marc.

Just two short months and I’m back in the swing of exam season, this time facing six exams over the next few days. Actually, it’s five now as I just took my Strategy exam this morning. I’m in the middle of cramming for Managerial Accounting and Leading Organizations for Friday then I’ll have two days to take a breather and dive back into the world of Finance, Operations Management, and Marketing.

The last day of my section was rather sad, although in a thrilling match of buzz-word bingo my group mate beat me out in calling BINGO as we were both the first to hit the jackpot.

After exams I’ve got a whirlwind tour of Europe before I head off to Singapore. First, I’m headed to Tignes, France for some snowboarding, then off to London, Barcelona, and Paris with my mother and sister. Shortly after New Year’s day, I’ll be flying off to Singapore to start anew in a warmer climate.

It’s been a while since I posted (well over a month in fact) and all I can really say is that the pace has certainly picked up here at INSEAD.  Finals are drawing near again (just 2 weeks away) and I’m somehow trying to make it all work while fitting in a trip to Zermatt this weekend to go snowboarding.

I should have some time to reflect after exams and should post something then.  Until then, back to work!

Part of business school life is being prepared for that light at the end of the tunnel…

It’s 2:15am.  I’ve been studying for the most part since I got up this morning at less time for dinner and a class.  Finals are just around the corner after that it’ll be a nice break.

On another note, I’m now in a band.  It’s fun to be playing music again.  I’ve missed time playing the drums with a group.  I think we’re going to try and perform a few songs at the INSEAD Cabaret.

Anyways, off to bed.
