First, on the b-school application front, I just submitted my R2 Wharton application and have an interview in Guatemala City with a Kellogg alumnus. It feels good to be nearly complete in pulling together my applications as all I have to do now is finish my Kellogg essays and then wait for decisions/more interviews. I tend to jump onto this site and put together a post before really diving into my essays. Writing here gives me the opportunity to warm up to writing essays and also helps me put some of my thoughts together.
On a bit more interesting note, Bente and I are getting ready for a trip to finally see the country. After three months in country, its sad to say that we have seen so few places in Guatemala. Nebaj, Atitlan, and Antigua are in fact the only cities I know outside of the Xela and Guatemala City. We’ll that’s about to change. Over a 17-day excursion extravaganza we’re going to be traveling with Bente’s sister and her two nieces for ten days followed by a seven day adventure with some of my friends from college. Here’s our rough itinerary:
Dec. 18th, go to Guatemala City airport and onto Quirigua.
Dec 19th, Quirigua to Poptun
Dec 20th, Poptun to Flores
Dec 21st, Flores to Tikal we’re we’ll see some amazing Mayan ruins
Dec 23rd, back down to Rio Dulce (Caribbean coastal area)
Dec 24th & 25th, Time in Livingston
Dec 26th, Back to Rio Dulce again to stay in a beautiful little resort where we can see lots of wildlife
Dec 27th, Rio Dulce to Guatemala where we will drop off Bente’s sister and pick up my friends, then down to Monterrico to a resort on an island called: Isleta de Gaia
28th, 29th, & 30th – Sun, Surf, Deep Sea fishing, even turtle racing in the Monterrico area. then off to San Pedro de Atitlan.
Dec 31st & Jan 1st – Back in Atitlan, we’ll be enjoying time on the lake and have some fun new years festivities, on the 1st we go to Antigua
Jan 2nd – Hike a volcano with lava at night, should be real fun
Jan 3rd – back home
It’s going to be an exhaustive trip for sure, but on the positive side, I hope to get my mind off of these applications and really take in some sun and relax. When I get back it’ll be just two weeks before I hear back from HBS and I hope to have some more news about schools.
Hope everyone is doing well. Until next time.

Hey Marc,
Just finished reading through your recent updates,I’ver been living vicariously through your adventures. I just finished a great book called Ishmael by daniel Quinn, good read. Here’s a quote for your thoughts “Perhaps the flaw in man is exactly this: that he doesn’t know how to live.”
Keep in touch
Seth.

Hi Marc…..Surprise..You grandpaw is finally going to write you. Things have been going so well at the store that I am under a lot less pressure and will now be able to take care of a lot of other things that I should have been doing all along.
Tell Bente hello. I think it is wonderful that you and her are getting to do so many special things. Good for both of you. Have a good time, but be careful. We love you both and want the best for you.
I mentioned recently that Nancy and I had decided to go hiking in Wyoming in late July or early August. Now I found out that Don Snider (my hiking partner in most of my hikes in 1977 to about 1995) wants to go also. It may now be myself, Don, Nancy, and perhaps two of Nancy’s girl friends. Wow..what a trip that could be. If you and Bente are available at the time, you and her could go too. We haven’t set the exact date yet, but will let you know later.
Love you two! Have fun and take care of yourself.
Bob
